Cat's in the Cradle

ARTIST: Harry Chapin
TITLE: Cat's in the Cradle

A child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking 'fore I knew it and as he grew
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, Dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
The little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you coming home, Dad
I don't know when
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on, let's play
Can you teach me to throw," I said, "Not today
I got a lot to do," he said, "That's okay"
And then he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please"
...but we'll get together then, Dad...

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to Dad if I could find the time
You see, my new job's a hassle and the kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me, my boy was just like me

Qdee shared this song with us....and it sets me thinking.....

Time really flies...

8 months had just passed right and Cayden had grown from 2.6kg little baby to the crawling 8.5 kg cute boy. Those endless nights which I have to wake up to feed him does not seems too long ago....not forgeting those times, when he just kept crying crying and I dun even know what was the problem....and also his first smile, his first laugh, his chicken pox days, his cheeky monkey grin...

This song really reminds me to capture those precious moments...and to slow my pace down to savour my time with him....after all, God has created him for me to love and nuture.....

Birthdays !

Today is Papa's and Gong Gong's Birthday !

We had lunch at Secret Recipes. Papa had his fav stew lamb although I finished half of his bread....haha...yum yum....

Mama wanted to go Baker's Inn to have some desserts. But somehow, we ended up in Centerpoint. There was a M&M show featuring 5 M&M dancing and singing. They really looked very weird !!!

Papa told me that he was really proud of mama.....because, they walked out of centrepoint with nothing but just a can of drink !

Gong Gong's birthday dinner was at this restaurant which he went to for his birthday last year. Last year, I was still in my Mama's tummy and this year, I have my own high chair.

Sydney Trip - Day 10

Mama:
Rush day today. Joash went to K-mart Hornsby to exchange the quicksmart stroller, because the one we bought in Bondi Junction had wobbly handles. The weird thing was that K-mart Hornsby priced the stroller at $79 buck (I thought all K-marts prices are the same?) and even gave Joash a discount. The price went down to $69 bucks. Not only we got a new stroller, we got the difference back too !!!! How weird can it be ?!

Wanted to return the baby carseat to Lorri and meet up with her before we go off. So we asked Lyndon to drive us to Eastwood. Meet up with Lorri and had lunch at Eastwood. Had my last bowl of good Vietnamese food in Sydney. I am going to miss it lots.

The flight back was not as smooth as the flight to Sydney.

Firstly, one piece of our luggage was overweight. The safety regulations in Australia only allow 32KG max per piece of luggage. Our big luggage is already 39KG. Sigh.....had to open up the luggage in public and repack some of the heavier stuff (namely Only Organic baby food jars) to the smaller bag.

Secondly, the lady at the check in counter said that she cannot book my seat next to Joash and Cayden cos the flight was packed. There were two choices (how nice ?!) : either Joash sit with Cayden in the bulkhead seat and I sit couple of rows behind...OR ....we forgo the bulkhead seat and all the three of us will sit together. I chose the latter...

Thirdly, Cayden was fussing already while we were boarding the airplane.

BUT...........................

When we boarded the plane, Qantas managed to arrange us to sit together at the bulkseat, which was great.

Just before take-off, Cayden dozed off to sleep while eating the teething rusks. Phew !!!

Shortly after take-off, the air stewardess asked us whether we mind moving to another bulkhead seat because of some complicated long reasons. Anyway, we moved....and wow....I was glad we moved.....cos we got FIRST CLASS SERVICE after that. The air stewardess made sure we were comfortable. She would serve us dinner first...and we got refreshments from business/first class. She even gave us a bottle of white wine and L'occtance travel pack to make up for the change of seat. Not bad !!! But enough said, I still will think twice about traveling with Cayden on Qantas.

Only managed to sleep at 1am after making sure Cayden was cleaned and had changed out of his dirty clothes.....but he woke up at 4am this morning screaming for milk because it was 7am Sydney time. JETLAG !!!

Sydney Trip - Day 9

Mama:
We checked out of Chatswood apartment and moved back into Lyndon's. Really have to thanks Lyndon and Christie for their hospitality...Appreciate it a lot. Thanks Lyndon and Christie !! Cayden give you guys a wet wet drooling kiss !!!!

We dropped by Westfield Hornsby. Yap...I went crazy again, seeing all those baby surf tees which were priced at 5.99 and on top of it, another 25% discount.

I got so tired after that..... zZZzzzZZzz....

Sydney Trip - Day 8

Mama:
The boys were still sleeping when I left the apartment this morning. Very Relaxed.....hmm....I wish I am still sleeping too....

Lorri picked us up for dinner. We planned to go Bankstown for Vietnamese pho tonight. I invited Trevor to come along and Lorri had another fren, Konni as well. We were waiting for Trevor at the train station. I noticed two guys walking suspiciously near to Joash. Instinctively, I pulled the haversack away from the two guys. One of them shouted at me : "Cool it, man.... " Hmm....i still think that they were trying to pick pocket...Joash was a easy target because he was carrying Cayden in front and also the haversack at the back.

After the pho dinner, Lorri drove us down to Italian Forum. This place is nice. We had coffee and cakes at a restaurant, chatting away with the live band playing Jazz music in the middle of the courtyard....BLISS.....

Lorri and Trevor had finally met up....hahhaa...couple of years back, I got something for Trevor from Shanghai and asked Lorri to pass it to him in Sydney. But, due to some unforseen circumstances, they never get to meet up.....and this time round, when we all finally had dinner together, Trevor and Konni actaully knew each other but lost contact.....hahhaa....Life is weird isn't .......

Sydney Trip - Day 7

Mama:
Today is shopping day...so I cancelled all dinner appointments. Today is only dedicated to shopping and shopping only. I wanted to get a swimming costume for Cayden and some bikis for my sis.

In the end, I got a lot of baby surf tees from K-mart and Tar-J. Cute and cheap !

Sydney Trip - Day 6

Mama :
The boys stayed in the apartment today to recuperate from yesterday adventure. Joash was very tired and Cayden was still sleeping when I left the apartment at 8 am...

We met up with Lyndon and Christie for dinner at Makoto Japanese restaurant, Chatswood. After dinner, Lyndon and Christie went up to our apartment and watched football. Australia is fighting for a place in the quarterfinals for the World Cup. The last time, they reached quarter finals was thirty years ago...so can you imagine the excitements and the anxiety the Aussies are feeling....all the bars with big screens were packed. We stayed just above a bar called The Chelsea....the “surround-sound” was great !

Cayden was cranky during the first half of the game because he missed his afternoon nap and he just dozed off for 20 minutes after dinner. However, despite all these, he still played with Lyndon and Christie. He would just looked at Lydon and tried to lure him to play. Once he got Lyndon attention, Cayden would crawl away thinking that Lydon was trying to catch him....hahhaa...it was so fun to watch.

After they left, I was trying to get Cayden to sleep. But he sat up a few times and looked at the door. I think he was hoping that Lyndon will walk in through the door and continue to play with him....hahhaa...

Today was a cold cold day. Temp dropped by 10 degrees.....Brrrr....

The boys (including my fren Trevor) planned a road trip today. They were going to Manly beach then Palm spring....and my office to pick me up for dinner....

We went to Manly for dinner and meet up with Trevor's fren, Joyce. Had a great Italian meal at Manly. Yum Yum !!!

Sydney Trip - Day 4

Mama :
Today is my first day of work in the Australia office. Joash and Cayden will be alone in the apartment....hmmm......crossing all my fingers and toes that the two boys will be fine.

I simply love working in Australia because I get to go home at 5 sharp. So at 5 plus pm, I booked a taxi home......and when I reached home.....Cayden was dozing off while Joash was feeding him milk.

Joash told me that Cayden had just cried himself to sleep...because he bumped his head on the metal piece which separate the toilet tiles and the carpet flooring. Poor boy !!!

I can see two abrasive cuts on his right forehead and a slight bump. Then he opened his eyes and realized that I am home. He gave me this bright and sweetest smile I have ever seen......that is priceless !!!

Sydney Trip - Day 3

Mama :
We will move to Saville Chatswood today. So we packed our bag and Lydon drove us to Chatswood...did a quick check in and had a nice quick HK style lunch with Lydon and Christie.

Lorri picked us up at 1 plus, drove us down to DFOs. We loitered around there till 5pm and then we moved off to Cabramatta.

THIS BEGINS THE BEST PART OF THE DAY.

Lorri specially drove us to Cabramatta to eat Vietnamese food. Once we reached there, Cayden did such a big poo poo that it stinked the whole car ! Where on earth can we find a nursery in Cabramatta !!! We had no choice....but to change him in the car. Man !!! it was really really messy !!! and Yiks !!!! it looked like the pureed pumpkin he had.....gees !

Ok, at last....we settled nicely in THE small Vietnamese restaurant. Among the 3 of us, we ordered tomato broken rice, pho and (drum rolling) 7 course of beef ! I heard that you can hardly find 7 course of beef in Australia now. They hardly do it anymore because it is pretty troublesome. It is eating beef cooked in 7 different Vietnamese styles...Yum Yum......

Anyway, for the benefits of my Vietnamese Chinese friends (namely Karen..hahhaa).....the courses are (in order ) :
1. spring roll with lighted boiled beef
2. spring roll with grilled beef
3. spicy beef salad
4. beef rolled in seaweed
5. beef cooked with mushrooms
6. beef cake
7. beef porridge

I love it when they let you prepared the spring roll yourself. Dip the spring roll paper in water...and filled it up !!!! YUM YUM !!!!

Sydney Trip - Day 2

Mama :
We managed to leave the house at 11 plus in the morning. We lunched at the Sydney Fish market and Cayden finish one whole bowl of oat/fish/veg/pumpkin/wild rice combo again ! His appetite is great. His tummy is showing like a beer belly....hahaa.....

Cayden is sunburned. Because of his drool, the areas around his cheeks and chin are worse than other areas. I can literally see the lines around his mouth and his chin. And he looked like a red lobster and his cheeks are starting to peel....the johnson and johnson i brought over is not helping much because his drool keep washing off the lotion... sigh....

We had coffee at The Rocks. It was such a relaxing afternoon. I did not want it to end.....sigh...yawn.....
We went back to Bondi again. This time (for dinner ) for nice tender steak at Hog's breath café

Cayden had the following for dinner.
2 tablespoon of pumpkin with wild rice from Only Organic.
2 tablespoon of oat/fish/vege rice combo from HT and Gerber
2 tablespoon of mashed potato from my dinner at Hog’s breath.

And I have yet mentioned the tibits he had during the car rides !

Sydney Trip - Day 1

Mama :
We reached the airport at 7 plus in the morning....C was already wide awake by then. And it was only 4 plus Singapore time. HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE SLEEPING !!!

We changed to a clean set of clothing and took a cab to Darling Harbour where Lydon is working. Packed our bags into his car and walked to Paddy's market for breakfast and waited for Lorri to pick us up....

The weather is pretty cold and we can see Cayden's teeth (or two front teeth) chattering. It was very hot last week. What happened this week ? Thanks Goodness, i brought long sleeve tee and two jackets for emergency like this.

Cayden gave Lorri a big big smile when he saw her...though he has only seen her for the first time. That rascal..... smiling to pretty girls so much...... Lorri drove us to Watson's bay where we had fish and chip. It was really really nice just sitting under the sun eating fish and chip. I wish we could do that in Singapore but it is simply too hot. Then we went to Bondi beach for coffee where Cayden finished a whole bowl of oat/fish/vege rice combo and about ¼ slice of bread....

Before we go Sydney, we have already decided to get this stoller - Quicksmartstroller....so Lorri drove us to Bondi Junction....and fortunately for us, K-mart is having 15% discount, so the stroller cost us 85 bucks only.......GREAT DEAL !

We went back to Darling Harbour again, waited for Lydon cos we are staying at Lydon's for two nights. He is staying in Hornsby .....nearing the last train station on the train map. The area is very quiet, very self-sufficient too.

Sydney Trip - Day 0

Mama :

I am really busy today. I was in the office for the first half of the day and taking the other half as day off....but I ended up leaving the office at about 2 pm. Gosh !!! I had to rush to pick up Cayden and do last minute checking and packing. Joash was still working when I reached home at 3 plus.

At about 5pm, we took a cab to the airport. Cayden slept in the cab cos he did not sleep for the whole day. We checked in, had a quick dinner and went to do some tax free shopping for Lydon.

Cayden was smiling to everyone....and I mean EVERYONE.....he smiled to the customs office who was checking our passport. He smiled and played peek a boo with the sales lady selling perfume. I was carrying him, and there were so many salegirls surrounding us playing with him.....but how come we din have any discount for the perfume ?!

We boarded the aircraft, there were 4 babies on board. There were a 8 months old aussie girl – Miranda, a 5 months old indo boy – cannot remember his name and sitting beside us is a 2 months old French girl – Mie.

Dun ask me how I know all these babies on board....hahaa......the mummies and daddies just came up and say hi......and have their babies say hi too....it was fun !

Mie and her parents were sitting beside us. When we were reaching Sydney, both Mie and Cayden woke up....and Cayden wanted to hold Mie's hand.....Mie is really a pretty girl. She has got long eyes lashes, big brown eyes and long fingers.......Cayden does have good taste !
